Welcome back to another year at our wonderful school. Fay gave us a couple extra days of vacation and I know all you parents are glad that it's over. We escaped this storm with nothing more than some inconvenience, so let's hope our good fortune lasts for the rest of the hurricane season.

Congratulations to all our boys and girls, teachers and staff, and parents that helped us achieve the coveted "A" school designation for the 8th year in a row.

I am very proud of our accomplishments and know that this year will be another great one.

As you all are aware, the economy in general is very bad and people are struggling to keep their heads above water financially. We too, as a school, are in very difficult times. We are very fortunate, however, that at our school we have the wonderful and active PTA that we do. It is because of the PTA funds raised and donated to our school that we are able to keep our Reading Lab, our hourly custodians and have supplies that otherwise we  would not have.

Please join our PTA and be an active member as the year begins. Everyone in our school benefits from all our activities. Please volunteer your services from home or in person in whatever capacity you are able.

Our main focus, as always, is the safety and education of our children, but we will always provide the extra family activities that make us unique among schools in Dade County.

You will notice many changes in the grade levels of our teachers this year. We have put together wonderful teams at every grade level and anticipate another great academic year.

Dear Parents,

Thank goodness that Fay didn't give us too hard a time. We did get plenty wet and two days of prolonged vacation, but now we are ready to begin the year. School opened today, Wednesday, August 20.

All the boys and girls looked rested and eager to begin  school, and parents, you looked relieved that it has finally begun.

Ms. Varona and I are thrilled to be opening another year at David Fairchild Elementary and welcome you to the 2008 - 2009 school year.

Last year everyone; parents, children, staff and teachers, worked long and hard to do a great job with our children, and again, our successes were reflected in our wonderful little school receiving an ‘A’ rating for the eighth year in a row.

As you know, this honor is a result of hard work and dedication, and most importantly, it indicates that we are all doing an extraordinary job of educating our children to meet the ever higher standards.

We look forward to having another great year in 2008 - 2009 not only with our academic programs, but also with our family events and functions that provide many ‘out of the ordinary’ activities for our children and families. We will all again work cooperatively to make our school the special place that it is and to maintain our high academic, safety and behavior standards.

As always, special thanks to our PTA for so actively supporting our school. Also, special thanks to all the parents and community members who help us with funding our programs by being sponsors for activities and for donations to our Act Fund. These are some of the things that make us one of the ‘elite’ schools in Dade County.

Again, welcome to the new year. Review your new Parent Handbook here on-line to refresh yourselves on our policies and procedures and remember, safety is our first and most important job. Please help us with this by being safe and courteous drivers and pedestrians.

Ms. Varona and Mr. Kinney
